An overview of syphilis tests in Korea
Lee Samuel-Y.
Abstract
The history of the application of immunodiagnostic tests to clinical medicine in Korea is rather short. To cover the all tests currently being used is beyond the scope of this review so 1 would like to focus primarily on the serologic tests for syphilis.
The clinical course of syphilis is not only variable but also hard to find out because once it gets into the latent period it doesn¢¥t show any clinical symptom. That makes the diagnosis and treatment difficult. In order to detect syphilis, patients history, clinical findings, dark field examination and serologic tests for syphilis are all necessary. However, be-cause many syphilitic patients do not show any typical symptom and because penicillin is easily accesible to patients without a doctor¢¥s prescription in this country, the serologic tests for syphilis should play a major role in the diagnosis of syphilis.
Although AIDS is becoming the most threatening venereal disease worldwide, syphilis is still one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted diseases and serologic tests are still the most useful measure for the diagnosis of this disease.
