Clinical and Physical Observations of Malayan Filariasis Cases in Yongju-Gun, Korea

Abstract
Seventy two of filariasis cases found in Yongju-Gun, Korea, were subjected for clinical investigation.
1. The microfilarial densities for 20 mm©ø of blood of the 72 cases were, no microfilaria but with elephantiasis in 6.9%, 1~30 in 80. 5%, and 31~161 in 12.6%.
2. Fourteen cases(19. 5%) showed no clinical manifestation, but the ramaining 58 cases (80. 5%) had various clinical complaints; lumbago, limb pain, cold sensation, lymphedema or elephantiasis, fever attack, urticaria, cough, palpitation, nausea, fatigue, dizziness and asthma in decreasing order.
3. Microfilarial density was not correlated with the clinical signs.
4. Lymphedema or elephantiasis was observed in 12 cases. The periods since they realized the symptom were 1~37 years, but only 4 cases remembered phlegmon-like onset symptom.
5. Site of the lymphedema or elephantiasis by number were, 5 in upper extremities and 23 in lower extremities.
6. No change was observed in body weight, blood pressure and hand grips.
7. Back lift strength of filariasis group of male was prostrated a little.
8. No clear-cut change in pulse rates was observed.
9. No essential eosinophilia was noticed in the present study.
10. Urine protein, sugar, and chyluria were all negative.
