Abstract
The effectiveness of cortisone in mice infected with RH and Beverley strains of Toxoplasma gondii was studied.
Daily dose of 0. 5mg of cortisone was administered subcutaneously to each experimental mouse according to various injection schedule.
There was no significant difference of phagocytic activity of macrophages between cortisone-treated and the control mice, but decrease of peritoneal macrophages in the cortisone -treated mice was appeared. In mice infected with the Beverley strain of Toxoplasma, the number of the pseudocysts in brain remarkably increased among cortisone-administered mice.
The results indicate that cortisone is effective in accelerating the development of Toxplasma cyst in host tissue, but suppresses macrophage supply into peritoneal cavity of mouse.
