Abstract
Total 126 hospital records of snakebites during two years of 1976 and 1977 were collected and analysed for a close search.
Yearly number of the bites were 61 in 1976 and 65 in 1977. Approximately 90% of the bites were observed during warmer months from May to September with a peak incidence (24.6%) in August. The bites (69.0%) in male were more than two times as frequent as those (31.0%) in female. Teen-agers were more frequently exposed to the bites. Higher incidence (20.6%) was occurred in fields during daylight hours between 12:00-17:59. Out of the total bites, 97.6% was bitten in the extremities; 45% in the upper and 52% in the lower extremities. Feet (34.9%) and fingers (27.8%) were the most inflicted sites.
The chief complaints in the bites were pain (100%) and swelling(100%). Other local symptoms and signs were petecheal hemorrhage(18.9%), necrosis (3.2%) and bulla (1.6%). Out of the total bites, 37 cases (29.4%) used tourniquet. The blurred vision (9.5%) was the most common symptoms. Vomiting, dizziness, chest discomfort, abdominal pain, diplopia, headache, vertigo and drowsiness were categorized in neurotic symptoms and recovered within short duration. Wyeth Polyvalent Antivenin was administered in 78 cases (61.9%) and tetanus antitoxin in 93 cases (73.8%), additionally to antivenin or alone. For conservative or symptomatic treatment, fluids, antibiotics, vitamin K or sedatives were administered. No any record of fatal case was encountered in the present study.
Unfortunately, the identification of snakes was impossible because of the poor information of patients.
