Stress Levels of Mothers With Hospitalized Children

Abstract
|
|
|
One hundred and fifty eight mothers whose children were hospitalized at pediatric ward of two general hospitals in Kwangju city from November 8 through December 6, 1986. A questionnaire had 5 areas related to stressful events including 46 items. Subjects were given instruction to rate 1=3 Liker type scale (slight, moderate, severe) according to degree of stress level (maximum score=3). The results of this study was analyzed statistically by T-test to obtain the following findings.
1. The causes of stress in mother expressed in stress level in parentheses are: children¡¯s diseases the highest stress level (2.29¡¾0.04), nursing care and treatment for children (2.15¡¾0.03), communication and interpersonal relationship (1.95¡¾0.04), family and socioeconomic problems (1.73¡¾0.04), and hospital environment (1.61+0.03).
2. "Admission for life threatening illness" was the high-test stressful event and the lowest was "not having visitors".
3. The stress level of events related to diseases showed a significant difference according to period of children¡¯s¢¥ hospitalization (p<0.05). Nursing care and treatment for children showed a significant difference according to children¡¯s¢¥ stage of growth and development (p<0.01), children¡¯s¢¥ hospital admission (p<0.05), and period of children¡¯s¢¥ hospitalization (p<0.01). Hospital environment showed a significant difference according to children¡¯s¢¥ sex (P<0.05) and. period of hospitalization (p<0. 01). Communication and interpersonal relationship showed a significant difference according to mothers¢¥ educational level and children¡¯s sex (p<0.05). Family and socioeconomic problems showed a significant difference according to mothers educational level (p<0.05), medical insurance (p<0.01), monthly income of family (p<0.05), and residence (p<0.05).
