Measurement of Alexithymia

Abstract

|
Alexithymia is a clinically derived concept that refers specific psychological construct with marked difficulty in verbal expressions and with limited ability in fantasy elaboration. These characteristics has shown to be involved in a variety of
psychosomatic disorders and related conditions. Although alexithymia is a heuristically useful concept that has important implications on research and clinical aspect, much of data pertinent to conceptual validation of alexithymia has been
anecdotal.
Based on different disciplines there are many kind of instruments currently available, With bearing the fact in mind that proper use of measuring tool is crucial, the author reviewed a list of methods of measuring alexthymia in terms of
observer-rated
questionnaire, projective technique, verbal content analysis, and self-report scale, with detailed illustrations, In brief, not a single instrument to date could be a sufficient measure for alexithymia that application of these instruments to
clinical
sample should be done with caution.
