The Survey of the Smoking Experience and Attitude of Middle School Students

Abstract
|
|
|
The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting the smoking experience and attitude of middle school students.
The subjects for this study were 356 boys in a middle school located in Incheon. Data was collected during from the 14th to 15th July, 1992 by questionare and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, X2 -test, F-test.
The results of this study are as follows;
1. The total 356 students were composed of 104 1st-grade, 132 2nd-grade, and 120 3rd-grade students. Among 356 students, 1st-grade 23.1 %, 2nd-grade 23.5 %, 3rd grade 37.5 % were experienced in smoking. It shows statistically significant difference from the grade (P < 0.05).
2. Among 356 students, 1st-grade 22.1 % 2nd-grade 31.8 % 3rd-grade 25.8 % had attitude of accepting smoking and showed most negative attitude about future spouse¢¥s smoking (Mean 4.76).
3. As the result of analyzing the factor of smoking attitude related to their father¢¥s smoking (P < 0.001), siblings smoking (P < 0.001), family deficit (P < 0.05), a negative social self-concept (P < 0.05), a negative characteristic self-concept (P < 0.05) and knowledge of health (P < 0.001).
4. As the result of analyzing the factor of smoking experience related to amount of monthly spending money (P < 0.05), sibling¢¥s smoking (P < 0.001), a negative characteristic self-concept (P < 0.001), knowledge of health (P < 0.05), and the acceptance attitude of smoking (P < 0.001).
