THE PHARMACOTHERAPY OF ALCOHOLISM
Abstract
Although there is little evidence that current pharmacotherapies are widely effective in alcoholism treatment, other than for the treatment of acute withdrawal, a number of drugs are widely used by physicians treating alcoholics. Recent developments, however, suggests that the adjunctive use of drugs with specific effects on identifiable neurotransmitter systems may eventually improve the treatment of acute intoxication and chronic alcoholism.
The authors reviewed the pharmacologic treatment of alcohol withdrawal, recurrent and chronic alcohol dependence.
