An Experimental Study on the Effect of High Cholesterol Diet upon the Kidney

Abstract
|
|
|
Forty healthy albino rabbits weighing around 1.8kg were used for the experiment and divided into 2 groups:
A. Control group fed basic diet
B. Cholesterol administered group fed basic diet with cholesterol 500mg/kg, corn oil 1.5gm /kg, and, bile salt 50gm/kg per day.
The result obtained from this experiment were as follows:
1. Serum lipid levels (cholesterol, phospholipid, triglyceride), very low density lipoprotein and low density lipoprotein were increased and high density lipoprotein decreased significantly as compared with those of control group.
2. In the cholesterol administered group, both kidney revealed partial disruption of the glomeruli, vacuolar changes of the tubular cells, and hyaline casts in the tubule.
