Abstract

The reproductive performance of the Sprague-Dawley rats under single paired rotational mating was examined to get. reproductive background data and establish single paired rotational mating system. The results obtained were as follows : The average litter size was 11.34¡¾2.04 heads : the average weaning rate was 92.29¡¾7.35 percent : sex redo (male/female) was 1.27¡¾0.96 : the average delivery interval was 28.94¡¾6.05 days. The reproductive performance of Sprague-Dawley rats at the age of 90-120 days was the best, the litter size was the largest and the weaning rate was the highest and the delivery interval was the shortest. In sex ratio, the number of male litters was slightly higher than that of female. The weaning rate of litters from dams which had 16 litters was the highest among those of different litter sizes, and it increased dependent upon the increment of litter size. There were no differences in the reproductive performance among 4 groups which participated in the rotational mating system. The present study will supply the source to animal breeders who produce rats using the single paired rotational mating system.
