Studies on Inapparent Infection of Laboratory Mice Produced a Conventional Breeding Unit

Abstract
For the improvement quality control of laboratory mice, these studies were carried out to examine the histopathological finding in vital organ as liver, kidney, spleen, lung and heart and to detect in the apparent infection, mouse hepatitis virus(MHV) and Mycoplasma pulmonis(MP), with serological test using ELISA to five inbred mice (A, BALB/c, C3H/He, C57BL/6 and CBA) produced and supplied from a conventional breeding unit. As the results, BALB/c, A, C3H/He, C57BL/6 and CBA showed histopathological lesions with various degree in kidney, liver, spleen and lung but not in heart. And all strains showed the positive reaction against MHV and MP in ELISA. These results suggest that the colonies of A, C3H/He, C57BL/6, BALB/c and CBA were infected with MHV and MP under conventional condition. Therefore, we recommend to eliminate thoroughly infected mice with apparent diseases and to make a routine check on microbiological monitoring regularly and advise to convert conventional system to SPF system as soon as possible.
