To achieve a better understanding of protective effects of water extracted propolis (WEP), we monitored the oxygen free radical-scavenging system against the acute hepatic damage induced by CC14 in mice. WEP was given orally to mice at a dose of 100 mg/kg day for 2 weeks and 1.0 mg/kg. CCl_4 was injected subcutaneously 24 hour before they were sacrificed. The results were summarized as follows: WEP decreased the activity of serum AST & ALT in CCl_4 treated mice. WEP increased the activity of catalase and G-Px in CCl_4 treated mice. WEP decreased the generation of O_2-& H_2O_2, MDA value and SOD activity, respectively. Thus, our data suggested that WEP induced the activity of catalase and G-Px as antioxidant and decreased the lipid peroxidation (MDA) through inhibition to O_2£þH_2O_2 generation.
