This study was designed to investigate the effect of red ginseng extract (RGE) extracted with 80% ethanol on lipid metabolism in brain of the learning and memory impairment animal model SAMP8 (female). Ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) is one of the most plant drugs which has been used as a medicine in Asia. Senescence-accelerated mouse (SAM) P8 were fed basic diets (control group) and experimental diets (RGE group) with 250 §·/§¸ BW of RGE for 8 months. Body weights gain in RGE group were consistently lower than those in control group and significantly inhibited about 25% compared with control group. Grading scores of senescence in RGE group remarkable inhibited about 40% compared with control group. Cholesterol level of brain mitochondria in RGE group were significantly 10% lower than that in control group. Lipofuscin level in brain of RGE group significantly increased about 10% compared with control group. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) levels in RGE group slightly increased, while arachidonic (22:6/20:4) ratios in brain mitochondria and microsomes of RGE group significantly increased about 30% compared with control group, respectively. These results suggest that body weight, grading score of senescence, total cholesterol and lipofuscin levels in brain of SAMP8 may be effectively inhibited by long-term administration of RGE, resulting in a greater anti-aging effect such as effect of dietary restriction on lifespan.
