Purpose: Aflatoxins (AF), mycotoxins from Aspergillus species, are human carcinogens. Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) can be exposed via contaminated milk or dairy products and produced in human body by the metabolim of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). In this study, we have estimated geometric means and reference values of urinary AFM1 concentration in Korean adults by age and sex.
Materials and methods: The study subjects were 1018 individuals (463 males and 555 females) who were probability sampled accroding to age, sex and province. Urinary AFM1 concentration were sampled with a competitive ELISA method, and sex- and age-specific geometric means and reference values, which was estimated by geometric mean x geometric standard deviation1.645.
Results: The geometric mean and the reference value for Korean adults were 1.978 pg/mL and 2.141 ng/g creatinine, and 11.053 pg/mL and 12.445 ng/g creatinine, respectively. The geometric means for men were 2.135 pg/mL and 1.954 ng/g creatinine, and those for women, 1.855 pg/mL and 2.310 ng/g creatinine, and the reference values for men were 12.724 pg/mL and 11.134 ng/g creatinine, and those for women, 9.755 pg/mL and 13.356 ng/g creatinine. Proportion of individuals whose urinary AFM1 concentration were greater than the corresponding reference value was relatively high in their 30s, 40s, or 50s, and in Chungbuk Province.
Conclusions: We suggest the reference values for Koreans as 11.0 pg/mL and 12.5 ng/g creatinine.
