Abstract

|
Adult hyperammonemia is associated with severe liver disease in 90% of cases. In the minority of hyperammonemic patients without severe liver disease, other unusual noncirrhotic causes should be considered. We report a patient with noncirrhotic hyperammonemic encephalopathy caused by a portosystemic shunt, whose clinical features and brain MRI findings were compatible with chronic hepatic encephalopathy.
