Purpose: This study evaluated the clinical presentations of pediatric intussusception in Chungbuk province and provided the information to assist in early diagnosis and treatment.
Materials and Methods: Pediatric patients (below 18 years old) with intussusception diagnosed by ultrasound or computed tomography (CT) between January 2013 and December 2013 were retrospectively investigated.
Results: A total of 87 patients (Male 49, 56.3%) were diagnosed as intussusception. The mean age was 25.4 month olds and patients younger than 24 months were 54 (62.1%) and 36 months were 71 (81.6%). Associated symptoms were cyclic abdominal pain (82, 94.3%), vomiting (43, 49.4%), bloody stools (16, 18.4%), and palpable abdominal mass (13, 14.9%). Patients with infectious illness at diagnosis of intussusception were 53 (60.9%). The locations of intussusception were ileo-cecal type (78, 89.7%), ileo-ileal type (6, 6.9%), and both type at the same time (3, 3.4%). Except 6 patients with ileo-ileal type, 81 patients underwent air-reduction and 77 (95.1%) recovered completely. Nine patients underwent surgery due to failure of air reduction or recurrent intussusception and all recovered completely. Patients with ileo-ileal type were spontaneously recovered without intervention.
Conclusion: Early diagnosis of pediatric intussusception is very important for successful treatment outcomes. This study may provide information about the clinical presentations of pediatric intussusception in Chungbuk province.
