Abstract

|
Chitosan, occurring naturally or obtained from chitin by alkaline deacetylation, has free amine groups in its backbone. As it is to biodegrade in vivo, and to interfere with the growth of a bacteria and mold, it has been known as a potential self-antimicrobial biomaterial. A wide various biomedical applications for chitosan have been reported in the scientific research over the last three decades. The current review looks into studies on the characteristic of the chitosan for cell engineering and tissue engineering, and on its applications of the bioartificial organs including the artificial skin, the artificial bone, the artificial cartilage, and etc.
