Abstract
Chitosan has excellent biocompatibility and non-toxicity after biodegradation so that has been widely applied as biomaterials. In this review, we propose chitosan to be applied to dental materials based on previous studies. Chitin is a natural polymer that is rich in nature, and mainly composed of crustaceans such as crabs and shrimps. Chitosan is a carbohydrate purified by deacetylating and amination of side chains by treating chitin with high temperature and alkali. Chitin and chitosan will be able to be applied as an antibacterial agent for the prevention of dental caries and bad breath by inhibiting dental caries-inducing bacteria in the oral cavity according to antibacterial function. In addition, the results of various in vitro studies shows promoted the attachment, proliferation, cell activity, and nodule formation of periodontal ligament cells by chitosan treatment. As a result, it can be applied to tissue-induced regeneration in periodontal surgery to induce periodontal and bone tissue regeneration. Accordingly, chitosan can be applied to the development of various dental materials through antimicrobial activity and tissue regeneration effect in the field of dental materials, and can be expected to be widely used in clinic area.
