A Possible Role of cyclic GMP in Membrane Fusion of Chick embryonic Myoblasts in Culture

Abstract
We propose that a transient rise in cGMP levels concomitant with the fusion is an important step in chick myoblast differentiation and the rise in cGMP levels is somehow correlated with guanylate cyclase activity and Ca 21 influx. This proposal is based on the following observations. (1) A transient rise in cGMP levels occurred concomitant with the cell fusion. (2) The cGMP analog, 8-Br-cGMP induced precocious fusion. (3) The guanylate cyclase inhibitor, methylene blue inhibited the fusion, without affecting the expression of muscle-specific proteins. (4) The calcium channel blocker D600 inhibited the rise in cGMP levels that coincided with the fusion.
