Importance of the Activation of Na+/H+ antiporter in Serum stimulated Proliferation

Abstract
To investigate the importance of the activation of Na+/H+ antiporter induced by serum, we used monensin, a carboxylic ionophore which stimulates Na+/H+ exchange across the plasma membrane and amiloride, inhibitor of Na+/H+ antiporter. We observed that monensin stimulated the transcription of c fos and c-myc, which are required for the cells to proceed Go to G, phase. These findings suggest that Na+/H+ antiporter may have important role in signal transduction pathway induced by serum.
