Abstract

p53 is a nuclear phosphoprotein that was initially detected in association with Simian Virus 40 (SV40) large T antigen in virus-transformed rodent cells. p53 is expressed in normal cells and appears to be involved directly or indirectly in the regulation of cell division. In the light of the important role that p53 protein may serve in the regulation of cell proliferation and apoptosis, it was of interest to determine the relative steady-state level of p53 mRNA compared with total RNA in various tissues from normal 129/SV mice (1 month old). In the present study, RNase protection assay was performed for quantitation of p53 mRNAs in the tissues and the results were analyzed by a densitometer. According to the results, the thymus and spleen contained a significantly higher portion of p53 mRNA in total RNA than any other tissues.
