Phytochrome as a Light Switch for gene Expression Plants
Song Pill-Soon
Abstract
The molecular mechanism of light signal transduction in plants, mediated by the red light sensor phytochrome, is not well understood. However, we now have substantial knowledge about the protein molecule. Recent molecular biological studies are also providing an insight into the possible molecular mechanism of the mode of action by this ubiquitous protein. In this minireview we will describe recently published and unpublished studies that pertain to the phototransformation of phytochrome A (box shown below) and its role in signal transduction through a G-protein-coupled signal cascade.
