Giant Chlorella Viruses
Van Etten, James L
Abstract
The Phycodnaviridae are a new family of large polyhedral dsDNA (> 300 kb) containing viruses that infect certain unicellular, eukaryotic, exsymbiotic, chlorella-like green algae. Morphologically the viruses resemble iridoviruses and their genome structure resembles that of poxviruses. Chlorella viruses have several unique features including: (¥¡) They encode DNA methyltransferases and DNA site-specific endonucleases, (¥¢) They glycosylate their proteins by a unique mechanism, and (¥£) The prototype chlorella virus paramecium bursaria chlorella virus contains at least two different types of introns.
