Improved Replication of HSV and Transcription of Alu Repeated Sequences by RNA Polymerase ¥² in HPV-transformed Cells

Abstract
A cervical cell line, 310A which harbors integrated, transcriptionally active copies of human papillomavirus type 16 DNA showed much higher permissivity of herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 compared to the parent cell line, 310. 310A also showed a slightly higher permissivity of HSV infection than HeLa cells, especially in the low multiplicity of infection. Consistent to this result more HSV virions were produced from 310A cells compared to HeLa or 310 cells. Furthermore, the transcription of endogenous Alu repeated sequences by RNA polymerase ¥² was significantly higher in 310A cells than 310 cells indicating that human papillomavirus protein(s) expressed in 310A cells might help HSV grow efficiently and increase transcription of Alu repeats.
