Abstract
RNA editing was investigated by analyzing nucleotide sequences of genomic DNA and complementary DNA of the cox¥± gene from Brassica napus mitochondria. Conversion from guanosine to adenosine at two putative positions, 422 and 455 of the cox¥± gene was detected repeatedly. This is considered a new type of RNA editing in plant mitochondria since reports to date involved conversion from cytidine to uridine, and occasionally, from uridine to cytidine. The putative conversions from glycine to glutamic acid, and serine to asparagine as deduced from the edited nucleotide sequences found in this study could allow reversion to the conserved amino acids of cox¥± as in other plant species. This result is consistent with the finding that RNA editing generates the transcript for producing a completely functional protein.
