Study on the Attitudes Toward Condoms and STDs/AIDS in Male College Students

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study was to measure the attitudes toward condom use and STDs/AIDS in make college students. The subjects (n=946: unmarried and aged 18-31 years: mean age 22.5 years) were drawn from 12 colleges (n=466) and 10 junior colleges (n=480) in Seoul metropolitan city, Kyonggi province, Taegu city, kyongsangbuk province, Taejon city and Chungchongnam province in korea during October, 2001.
Among the 946 respondents, 48.3 percent of male college students had experienced a sexual intercourse and the experience rate of condom use was 68.5 percent. The condom users showed more positive attitudes toward condom use compared with non user. The perceived susceptibility and severity to STDs/AIDS were not related to the experience of condom use or non-use. There were no association between knowledge about STDs/AIDS and the experience of condom use. Having a experience of condom use were significantly associated with future intention to use condoms
