Poverty and Mental Health among Korean Older Adults: The Moderating Role of Death Preparation
You Su-Ha

Kim Gi-Yeon
Abstract
Poverty of the older adults in Korea has been a serious social problem. Various measures have been taken to prevent poverty in the older adults from leading to mental health issues such as depressive symptoms, but preventive interventions have not received significant attention. This study was to test not only the effect of geriatric poverty on mental health such as depressive symptoms and life satisfaction, but also the moderating effect of death preparation in the relationship between the poverty and the mental health. The research data was part of the questionnaire responses of 9,885 older adults extracted from the 2020 survey conducted by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, and the aforementioned effects were tested by the hierarchical regression analyses. Results showed that geriatric poverty was statistically significant for both depressive symptoms and life satisfaction, and death preparation moderated the relationship between poverty and mental health. That is, older adults in poverty group would have more depressive symptoms and lower life satisfaction than those in non-poverty group, and death preparation would buffer the negative effect of poverty on mental health. The findings of the present study suggest that it might be necessary to establish a support system for death preparation to prevent or alleviate mental health issues among older adults in poverty. This study is significant in proposing novel approaches to alleviate inequality in mental health among older adults in poverty.
