Effects of Ethrel on Sex Expression and Yield of Spinach Under the Field Conditions

Abstract
1. The present experiment was conducted during the period from October 1, 1969 to May 1, 1970, in order to study the effect of Ethrel (Amchem products, Inc. furnished) on sex expression of spinach plant. Ethrel was applied at various levels 20 days after seed sowing(October 1, 1969).
2. Sex ratio as dioecious plant was expressed to be male 1 to female 2.39 when treated with 200 ppm Ethrel and 1 to 0.76 without the treatment. Increased number of female plant was brought about yield increase by 64% above the control.
3. Application of 400 ppm Ethrel resulted in reduction of yield due to the chemical damages which may have been the cause of winter injuries. None of female plants tended to show the number more than the control with this high level application.
