Abstract

|
Influences of varied levels of light intensity and nitrogen application were assessed for leaf variegation in pot-grown Lonicera japonica var. aureo-reticulate. The concentration of nitrogen and carbohydrate compounds was measured under the same conditions. The results were summarized as follows:
1. Leaf-variegation of golden appearance was more prominent under higher level of light intensity than low light intensity.
2. Leaf-variegation under same regime of light intensity was shown more prominent with lower rate of nitrogen application. The effect of higher light intensity on leaf variegation was decreased by higher rate of nitrogen application. The nitrogen effect on the variegation was the most prominent under the full sunlight.
3. Total carbohydrate level increased with light intensity or nitrogen application. Nitrogen content of the leaves was higher under shade condition. Increase in carbohydrate/nitrogen ratio induced leaf variegation of Lonicera japonica var. aureo-reticulata.
