Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the effects of photoperiod to stock plant, temperature, media and plant growth regulator pretreatment on root development and cuttings quality in Dianthus caryophyllus L. ¢¥Desio¢¥ plug cutting. Rootball diameter and root length markedly increased with 8h day length+Hormex treatment. Dipping with NAA (1000 §·¡¤L^(-1)) for 10 s increased the rootball diameter, root length, rooting zone, shoot length and rooting rate. Rootball diameter and root length increased with hot water pretreatment at 40 C for 5 or 10 min. Hot water and plant growth regulator pretreatment resulted in 100% rooting rate. 40% and 60% moisture contents of tissue paper in the box during cold storage were effective in enhancing rootball diameter and shoot length. Rootball diameter was promoted by low temperature treatment at 5 C for 2, 4, 6 weeks. Especially, rootball diameter and rooting rate increased with low temperature treatment after NAA or NAA+benomyl dipping pretreatment. Rootball diameter, root length and shoot length in media on the rooting of plug cuttings were best improved by vermiculite and peatmoss mixture (1:1, vlv) treatment.
