Abstract

|
A polyethylene film tent was set under the ¢¥Fuji¢¥/M.26 apple crown for inducing water stress and investigating water relations of the tree during the vegetation period. Only mild water stress of predawn water potential in the range of -0.37 to -0.66 §ç could be induced as it was not completely effective in excluding rainfall from soil under the tree in the case of heavy rain. No osmotic adjustment was observed in mild water stressed trees. However, stomatal conductance decreased to 63 to 66% as compared with no-stressed control. Stomata began to close in part even under enough soil water content when vapor pressure deficit was higher than 2 §æ, and leaf water potential dropped lower than -2.3 §ç.
