Abstract

|
To increase crossability in interspecific single or three way crosses, the effects of bud (12 hours before anthesis) and old-flower (12 hours after anthesis) pollination were compared with normal pollination (0 hour after anthesis) in crosses among H. syriacus, H. sinosyriacus and interspecific hybrids (H. syriacus¡¿H. paramutabilis). Both of bud and old-flower pollination were effective in increasing fruit and seed setting from 2 to 12 times in single and three way interspecific crosses However, its effectiveness was different depending on the genetic nature of maternal parent. Stigma receptivity and the number of pollen tubes in the style were increased by bud or old-flower pollination. These increase of pistil receptivity resulted in higher fruit setting in single or three way interspecific crosses. However, the short longevity of styles (12-24 hrs) was a limiting factor for pollen tube penetration into the ovary in old-flower pollination. Effects of old-flower and bud pollination were closely related with penetration of pollen tubes into the ovary. Pollens failed to germinate in cut-style pollination.
