Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of a modified Visual Analogue Scale (mVAS) for measuring pain.
Method: We evaluated 20 patients with low back pain who had been treated on the department of acupuncture for 4 weeks by short form McGill pain questionnaire, pain rating score, pain disability index, and mVAS. The mVAS consists of 5 parts: rest pain (0 or 1), night pain (0 or 1), disability (0 or 1), 7 cm long VAS and total score (0 to 10 points).
Results: The total score of mVAS had very high reproducibility. The correlations were consistently high and significant between pain scores derived from 4 different methods. This finding support the validity of the mVAS. And it was also shown to be sufficiently sensitive to demonstrate differences due to treatment as statistical levels very sensitive for the change of pain.
Conclusion: The mVAS is a valuable clinical method which is simple, easy to perform, and more comprehensive than the standard VAS.
