Hip arthroplasty is one of the most commonly used treatment methods for hip joint lesions such as traumatic dislocation, avascular necrosis and degenerative arthritis. Pain following hip arthroplasty is caused by a multitude of conditions, including infection, aseptic loosening, heterotopic ossification and referred pain. It is also recognized that soft tissue inflammation about the hip, such as bursitis, can lead to hip pain after hip arthroplasty. Reported here are cases of patients presenting with hip area pain following hip arthroplasty. The pain was aggravated by passive and active joint movement and with weight bearing. The hip joints were evaluated by ultrasonography, bursography and contrast-enhanced computed tomography. In both cases, cystic lesions were well demarcated and bursal fluid was aspirated. Infiltration of local anesthetics (0.5% lidocaine) led to pain alleviation and functional improvement. We report two cases of bursitis around hip joint area that developed following hip arthroplasty with review of literature.
