Introduction: Articular cartilage is avascular and devoid of nervous and lymphatic tissue, thus there is no inflammatory reaction and cell supply for regeneration is sparse. In other words, the injured articular cartilage is very limited in the recovery and regeneration of itself. We introduce cell therapy and gene therapy for articular cartilage regeneration.
Body:Cell therapy involves inducing metaplasia of mesenchymal stem cell to chondrocytes, autogenous or allogenous osteochondral graft, resurfacing arthroplasty, and chondrocyte transplantation. Gene therapy is aimed at increasing the activity of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase, TIMP) or suppressing the production of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) which is known to destroy the extracellular matrix of articular cartilage.
Conclusion: From autogenous transplantation of chondrocyte to trial of gene therapy using genetic recombination are important developments in the treatment of articular cartilage disorders.
