Abstract
Objective: To find the most appropriate needle electrode thickness in treatment of myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) in terms of quantitative pain intensity during therapy.

Materials and Methods: Twenty four patients with MPS of the upper trapezius muscle were treated with intramuscular needle electrical stimulation (IMNES). They were assigned to one of three groups by needle electorde thickness; group 1 (n=8), 0.25 mm; group 2 (n=8), 0.35 mm; group 3 (n=8), 0.4 mm. Effects were assessed during needling, immediately after treatment, 3rd and 7th day of treatment by visual analogue scale (VAS) and pressure threshold. Treatment were performed at 1st and 3rd day.

Results: VAS was significantly improved, immediately after treatment in group 1 and 2, whereas 7th day in group 3 (p£¼0.05). Needling soreness is significantly higher in group 3 than in group 1 (p£¼0.05). Pressure threshold was significantly increased at 7th day in all experimental groups (p£¼0.05).

Conclusion: This study showed no significant differneces in the therapeutic effects according to the needle thickness, but may show that thin needle electrodes are more appropriate in the treatment of MPS of upper trapezius muscle considering soreness during needling.
