Abstract
Epidural steroid injection (ESI) has been one of the most common procedures for managing lumbosacral radiculopathy in many outpatient clinics, especially focused on pain control. Usually the risks of side effects or complications are very low and the majority of those risks are minor and transient with developing technique and safety monitoring. Nevertheless, in a rare case, the serious side effects or complications if they are occurred, they can be a life -threatening and fatal. The complications related to ESI roughly divide into problems due to injection procedure per se, used drug, and epidural space related. The frequent complications related with injection procedure per se include local infection, bleeding, and nerve injury. The side effects of use drugs are local and systemic effects of local anesthetics and steroids. The epidural space related complications such as epidural hematoma, abscess, and post-puncture headache are usually serious and need urgent management. Because of above mentioned side effects and complications, the meticulous and comprehensive examination before ESI and continuing careful vigilance for any kinds of neurologic deterioration after injection are mandatory.
