Objective : To evaluate the efficacy of muscle energy technique in the patients with myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) of neck.
Materials and Methods: We studied 24 patients. The patients with MPS of neck were diagnosed by Simons criteria. They were classified by sham and treatment groups. In the treatment group (n=12), MPS muscles were treated with the muscle energy technique (MET). We treated the control group (n=12) by means of sham manipulative treatment. Both groups received the selected treatment 4 times over a 2-week period (2 times per week). Main outcome measures were visual analog scale (VAS), numbers of tender points, and pain rating index (PRI). The treatment outcomes were assessed before treatment, at 1 week and 2 weeks after MET.
Results: There was significant decrement in VAS at 1 week and 2 weeks after MET in the treatment group (p£¼0.05). PRI score showed significantly improvement in the treatment group than the control group after 1 week and 2 weeks (p£¼0.05). But, there were no significant differences between the control and treatment group in the numbers of tender point (p£¾0.05).
Conclusion:MET may be superior to passive manipulative treatment for decreasing pain in patients with chronic MPS in neck
