Efficacy of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy in the Treatment of Musculoskeletal Disorders

Abstract
After extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) was first applied in the management of ununited fractures, it has been applied popularly in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders such as calcifying tendonitis, lateral epicondylitis and plantar fasciitis. Although ESWT has become popular treatment method in the musculoskeletal diseases, there are considerable debates on appropriate treatment protocol and its efficacy. Based on results of randomized controlled trials, issues relating to use of ESWT, especially treatment indications, protocols, parameters and characteristics of devices will be reviewed
