Abstract
Complex regional pain syndromes (CRPS) are neuropathic pain disorders developing as a disproportionate consequence of painful trauma or a nerve lesion affecting the limbs, or a bone fracture, or as a consequence of a remote process like stroke, spinal cord injury and myocardial infarction. The entire pathophysiology of CRPS is not resolved, and there is no diagnostic gold standard. A careful clinical evaluation and additional test procedures should lead to an adequate diagnosis. An early diagnosis and an interdiscriplinary approach are important for optimal and successful treatment. Treatment should be immediate, and most importantly directed toward restoration of full function of the extremity.
