A Study of Psychosocial Factors Influencing Suicidal Ideation and Quality of Life among the Elderly in a Regional Small City

Abstract

|
Objectives : This study was aimed to investigate the prevalence of depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation and to analyze the factors influencing on quality of life and suicidal ideation among elderly.
Methods : Data of this study was collected from over 65 years old who were located in a province. 350 data sheets were collected among them 330 were used in analyzing. All of subjects were evaluated with Generalized anxiety disorder-7, Beck scale of suicidal ideation, Short form of Geriatric Depression Scale-Korean version, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Global Assessment of Recent Stress, and World Health Organization Quality of life Scale. Pearson¡¯s correlation test and stepwise regression analysis were used as statistical analysis methods.
Results : The prevalence of depressive symptoms in elderly people was 22.1% and suicidal ideation was 19.7%. Quality of life have strong relation with social support (r=.591, p£¼.01), depressive symptoms (r=-.501, p£¼.01) and global stress (r=-.349, p£¼ .01). These are explained 46.7% of the depressive symptoms. Suicidal ideation was related to depressive symptoms (r=.519, p£¼.01), global stress (r=.482, p£¼.01) and anxiety (r=.296, p£¼.01) and these factors accounted for 33.6% of suicidal ideation.
Conclusion : The most important variable influencing on suicidal ideation was depressive symptoms and quality of life was social support.
