Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the associations between older persons¡¯ self-rated health and individual/environmental characteristics, and to explore its differential effect by individual socioeconomic status. Data are drawn from multiple sources including the 2019 Community Health Survey and National Geographic Indicators. Using the analytic sample of 27,879 older urban residents living in 168 si-gu districts, multilevel regression models are estimated. The results indicate that the better accessibility (shorter distance) to community parks, senior centers, hospitals/clinics, and public gyms are associated with better self-rated health, although the association is no longer statistically significant after adjusting for covariates. This study also finds that the positive effects of the better access to community resources are particularly evident for older adults with lower household income levels compared to their counterparts. The findings suggest that better access to community health promoting resources is important for the health and well-being in later life and the special attention and policies for socially, economically vulnerable groups are needed.
