The Association between Handgrip Strength, Walking Time and Quality of Life in Elderly

Abstract

|
Objective: To evaluate that the association between handgrip strength, daily walking time and quality of life in elderly.
Methods: From the 2018 National Health and Nutrition Survey, data of the 1,028 males and females over the age of 65 and above who received handgrip strength test and completed the questionnaire on daily walking time and quality of life, was extracted and the correlation between each score of dimensions and hand grip strength and daily walking time was analyzed.
Results: There was significant association between handgrip strength and 5 dimensions of quality of life (p<0.001) except pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression dimension in male elderly. The daily walking time showed no association with quality of life. The age had the most negative association with quality of life in male elderly, whereas there was no significant association in female elderly.
Conclusion: The higher handgrip strength in the elderly has positive relationship with quality of life, and the daily walking was not significantly related to quality of life.
