Abstract

|
Giant cell tumor is a rare tumor with uncommon location in the cervical spine and has been currently treated with sur- gical removal and adjuvant treatments including cement implantation, cryosurgery, phenolization, and irradiation. A 21-year-old woman complained posterior neck pain and bilateral shoulder pain. Radiologic findings showed C3 vertebral body mass with cord compression. After surgical removal, the histological examination showed tuberculosis of spine, so she had taken anti-tuberculosis medication for 1 year, however one year after the patient was readmitted due to recurrent posterior neck pain and quadriparesis and MRI showed markedly enlarged tumor mass compared to preopera- tive condition. Under the impression of hematopoietic malignant lesion, intravenous dexamethasone administration was done. After steroid injection, MRI showed that the mass was markedly reduced in size. Salvage radiotherapy was started, but MRI after radiotherapy showed that the tumor mass was enlarged in size and compressed the spinal cord significantly. The patient’s symptoms were not controlled. Further 2nd stage operation via posterior and anterior route were performed and nearly total removal of tumor was done. At final, the histological examination demonstrated giant cell tumor.
