Abstract
With the development of ultrasound technology, it has become possible to diagnose neonatal ovarian cysts not only postpartum but also prenatally. Fetal ovarian cysts can rarely undergo torsion in utero, which can lead to loss of the ovaries or fallopian tubes, impairing future fertility. It can also result in adhesion of the necrotic ovary to the bowel or other organs, which could lead to intestinal obstruction or perforation, and even sudden infant death. Despite their rarity, obstetricians and pediatricians often deal with neonatal ovarian cysts. In addition, despite severe complications, no consensus regarding their management is currently available. We report 2 cases of neonates who were diagnosed with a fetal ovarian cyst in utero and followed up without treatment. They were surgically treated after birth at another hospital. Based on these cases, we also review and discuss the treatment of neonatal ovarian cysts with or without torsion during the prenatal and postnatal periods.
