The protective effects of various solvent extracts and ethanol fractions from fingerroot were evaluated against UVB-induced photoaging in human skin fibroblasts. The ethanol extract of fingerroot showed cytoprotective effects but high toxicity when treated at 2 ¥ìg/mL or more. Therefore, we partitioned the ethanol extract into chloroform, ethyl acetate and aqueous fractions. Among these fractions, the water fraction from the ethanol extract showed dose-dependent protective effects with no cytotoxicity up to 20 ¥ìg/mL. In addition, the water fraction effectively inhibited the mRNA expression and protein production of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 and MMP-3 induced by UVB irradiation and increased the intracellular collagen levels. In this study, the water fraction of fingerroot ethanol extract exhibited skin protective effects against photoaging induced by UVB.
