This study investigated the anti-oxidative and hepato-protective activities of extracts from six kinds of medicinal herbs (Acer tegmentosum Maxim., Artemisia argyi H., Puerariae lobata Ohwi, Taraxacum officinale, Curcuma longa L., Hovenia dulcis fruits). Further, these six herbs were selected according to a literature review, and their compositions were also investigated. Based on the results of the total phenolic compound contents, the anti-oxidative activity [1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2¡¯-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity, and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP)], and the NO and reactive oxygen species inhibitory activity of the water and 30% ethanol extracts of each sample, four species were selected (except H. dulcis fruit and C. longa L.). All four of the selected species had higher activity than that of the H. dulcis and C. longa L.. Eleven kinds of compositions were then prepared (samples A to K that had different composition ratios of the four selected herbs). The contents of total phenolic compounds were highest at 72.88 mg/g in G and lowest at 59.44 mg/g in K. The anti-oxidative activities of the B, F, G, and I compositions were analyzed, and these four compositions had relatively high levels of total phenolic compounds. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of G was 77.32% at the concentration of 500 ¥ìg/mL, and that of FRAP was the highest at 623.23 ¥ìM at the same concentration, and the activity of ¥â-carotene decoloring inhibition was also highest at 80.97%. The AST and ALT activities of the compositions within the concentration range of 100¡500 ¥ìg/mL were significantly different from those of the positive control.
