Abstract

|
Fungal infections have become more important in the clinical field because of the increasing number of immunocompromised patients, such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, transplantation recipients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy, and patients needing critical care, as well as the widespread use of invasive devices such as central venous catheters. Moreover, the current emphasis on antimicrobial prophylaxis has contributed to the changing epidemiology and antifungal resistance of invasive fungal infections. This article focuses on invasive candidiasis, aspergillosis, and mucormycosis, giving a brief overview regarding the clinical manifestations, recent epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment, and recent healthcare-associated infection topics. Basic concepts and strategies of infection control for clinically important fungi are also summarized in this article.
