Abstract
It is increasingly revealed that asthma is not a single disease, but a syndrome with vast heterogeneity in pathogenic mechanism, symptom severity, and treatment response. Approximately 10 to 20% of asthmatic patients remain refractory to current standards for its treatment. In the 1990s and 2000s, initial studies have attempted to define phenotypes of asthma. This review will discuss the present understanding of different asthma phenotypes and endotypes that lead to more targeted and personalized therapy to asthma, especially severe asthma.
