Abstract

|
|
Smoking cessation is the leading preventable cause of morbidity and mortality. All smokers must be encouraged and assisted to quit smoking by health care participants. The combination of behavioral non-pharmacologic therapy and pharmacotherapy is the most beneficial method in supporting smokers to quit. The use of nicotine replacement therapy, bupropion and varenicline is the recommended strategy of smoking cessation for smokers except adolescent and pregnant women. The smoking rate of Individuals with mental illness is more than two times than smokers without mental illness. However, combination therapy increases smoking abstinence rates in smokers with mental illness. E-cigarette is not recommended for the purpose of smoking cessation because the long-term safety and effectiveness is not proven.
